King Corn

I watched a documentary this weekend called King Corn. It was an eye opening expose about our corn manufacturing industry. In the film two young men have their hair samples tested to determine where the carbon in their bodies has come from. The test revealed that their carbon (which is as the basis for many molecules in the body) had come from corn. They were astounded. They were thinking of corn as depicted in warm pictures of the south, like meals filled with corn on the cob, corn bread, corn casseroles, creamed corn etc. How wrong they were, the corn they were built of came from consumption of high fructose corn syrup in candy, cookies, breads, grain bars, almost all sweetened beverages (think soda and popular sports drinks), corn that has been fed to livestock as feed and had been passed down the chain to them. Corn was silently slipped into their food as "scientific", mysterious ingredients in processed food products like : Hydrolyzed corn extract and corn syrups, solids extracts, and oils. Many fried foods are friend in what, folks? You guessed it Corn OIL! Corn has become an has become a silent pervasive part of our diet. During the film they open the concept of an insidious nature of corn in our diet.

Did you know that consumption of high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) has increased by a a whopping 10,673 percent between 1970 and 2005 as reported by the USDA Dietary Assessment of Major Trends in U.S. Food Consumption report.

High fructose corn syrup has long been associated with increased diabetes and obesity. Recent studies suggest that this is not true -- WARNING-- the studies suggesting toxic High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS) is warm and fuzzy and not toxic and dangerous were funded by the soda companies that utilize HFCS more than any other food manufacturer. That is like letting the criminals police themselves (we don't believe in honor among thieves why should we allow the industry that relies on HFCS the most determine how safe it is.) That is a level of insanity.

Have you seen the ads defending HFCS? In the history of the world when have you seen an individual "ingredient" have to come out to defend it self. You've never seen Red food dye #40 come out with an add. "Why are you giving your kids red dye #40? Why wouldn't you it's shown to be as safe as yellow dye #5 and is part of a healthy diet if eaten in moderation...." But there is High Fructose Corn Syrup putting out adds trying to spin that it is not toxic and killing Americans hand over fist. What's more, are you aware that in the past decade, as people's consumption of HFCS has soared unabated, diabetes has increased by a staggering 90 percent and 8 percent or 24 million Americans now have diabetes? Coincidence I think not.

Dr. Mercola, renowned nutritional expert states. "To add insult to injury, the corn that the high fructose corn syrup is metabolized from nearly all comes from genetically modified corn which is fraught with its own well documented side effects and health concerns.High fructose corn syrup is is not something that should be in your diet at all."

Not milk...2

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the average American consumes more than 550 pounds of dairy products annually, which is 40 percent of the bulk of the food we eat. Yuck.
Let me start with some old research as I was taught this milk was bad starting in Chiropractic college 15 years ago in nutrition.

"Osteoporosis is caused by a number of things, one of the most important being too much dietary protein." Science 1986;233(4763)

"Consumption of dairy products, particularly at age 20 years, were associated with an increased risk of hip fractures...metabolism of dietary protein causes increased urinary excretion of calcium."American Journal of Epidemiology 1994;139

"Countries with the highest rates of osteoporosis, such as the United States, England, and Sweden, consume the most milk. China and Japan, where people eat much less protein and dairy food, have low rates of osteoporosis."
Nutrition Action Healthletter, June, 1993

Why you ask? This is because milk is made for COWS not people. Since there is more phosphorus in milk than people need. The body will get rid or the phosphorus by attaching two Calcium to it then out though the kidneys so there is a net loss of Calcium in the bones!!! So drink more and have more osteoporosis!

Health Care Reform? Part Deux

Last week I shared with you my concerns about the supposed health care reform. This week I want to share with you my ideas on how to actually reform our health care. The secret is to stop searching for the cure and start preventing the disease. Every year trillions of dollars are spent to research possible cures for lifestyle diseases and every year a new fad cure hits the market that moves us even further from health (ex. Fosamax that is used to "cure" osteoporosis that actually causes an increase in fractures).
With all of the money raised walking/running for this cause or that cause to raise money to search for the "cure", we could afford to provide our schools with better food, start adding, instead of cutting gym classes and active time, and start subsidizing things that will actually make us healthy like healthy fruits and vegetable or exercise.
So today I want you to stop thinking that you can abuse your body with a diet consisting of 180 lbs of sugar (Actual average consumption of Americans)and stop starving your body of nutrients and exercise because you think that there will be a "cure" to put you back together after years of abuse, because there is never going to be one. Instead take the first step towards health care reform by putting on your shoes and going for a walk, tomorrow go further and longer, the next day add 2 servings of vegetables to your diet and every day after try to do better!!

Not Milk....1

"MILK" Just the word itself sounds comforting! "How about a
nice cup of hot milk?" The last time you heard that question
it was from someone who cared for you--and you appreciated
their effort.

The entire matter of food and especially that of milk is
surrounded with emotional and cultural importance. Milk was
our very first food. If we were fortunate it was our
mother's milk. A loving link, given and taken. It was the
only path to survival. If not mother's milk it was cow's
milk or soy milk "formula"--rarely it was goat, camel or
water buffalo milk.

Now, we are a nation of milk drinkers. Nearly all of us.
Infants, the young, adolescents, adults and even the aged.
We drink dozens or even several hundred gallons a year and
add to that many pounds of "dairy products" such as cheese,
butter, and yogurt.

Can there be anything wrong with this? We see reassuring
images of healthy, beautiful people on our television
screens and hear messages that assure us that, "Milk is good
for your body." Our dieticians insist that: "You've got to
have milk, or where will you get your calcium?" School
lunches always include milk and nearly every hospital meal
will have milk added. And if that isn't enough, our
nutritionists told us for years that dairy products make up
an "essential food group." Industry spokesmen made sure that
colourful charts proclaiming the necessity of milk and other
essential nutrients were made available at no cost for
schools. Cow's milk became "normal."

You may be surprised to learn that most of the human beings
that live on planet Earth today do not drink or use cow's
milk. Further, most of them can't drink milk because it
makes them ill.

Over my next few blogs I will shake your beliefs in milks
sold to you starting with Why milk causes Osteoprosis!!!

Live Longer

You are born to express physical, mental and spiritual health; to radiate vitality, harmony, peace, joy, optimism, strength, love and healing at any age.

But it rarely seems that way. Disharmony, illness, disease, depression, fatigue, and emotional problems touch so many lives. Too many of us walk this earth with our bodies, hearts and souls in pain.

Yet no baby is born bored or depressed. Infants are full of wonder and awe. They breathe deeply, relax completely, radiate energy and sparkle with the light of life in their eyes. They are closer to their natural state, more connected to it, with a clearer connection to the wisdom and intelligence that we are given.

To be truly healthy and alive you must be fully connected to that inner wisdom (innate intelligence) that travels from our brain to our body via our nervous system.

In healing, the goal is to help you better connect to that inner source so your inner doctor may work its miracles. A complete disconnection from this source results in death; a partial disconnection results in dis-ease or disharmony. Many people are in this state; with less than 100% connection, they are less than fully alive. As a result, these people will suffer from health problems more and leave this world before they need to.

Our word “health” derives from the old English word “hale” meaning whole. You are healthy when you are whole, unified, integrated and complete – not fragmented, disintegrated, disconnected or incomplete.

Too many people live their lives silently waiting for disease to seemingly “strike” out of nowhere. They must live with years of body malfunction before the medical profession can discover and diagnose a problem. Does it have to be that way?

More and more individuals are choosing another path. Instead of waiting for their health to deteriorate and have a life threatening diagnosis, they are taking responsibility for their health now and choosing health care systems and lifestyles that can maintain and enhance their health.

If you have your spine and nervous system checked on a regular basis you will have the ability to have that inner intelligence flow to your whole body throughout all your days, ensuring a longer and healthier life.

Health Care Reform?

Listening to the arguments and ideas about the new health care reform I have come to the realization that this whole thing is not really about health care reform at all it is about insurance reform. We have all heard the stats about the US spending on health care and how we as a country are getting sicker and sicker each year. CBS news reported in November of 2009 that there are 2.5 million unnecessary surgeries per year costing $700 billion ($100 billion alone on unnecessary cardiac surgery), 80% of a prescription drug use is of marginal use, and 36% of all diseases in the US has an iatrogenic cause (meaning that it is due to medical intervention). I doubt that reforming how these things are paid for will solve our countries problems. To solve our health care crisis we need true health care reform. Next week I will give you my thoughts on what true health care reform should look like.

HEALTH IS NOT AN EVENT!!!!!!!

As a chiropractor I spend a lot of time in the community talking to perfect strangers about chiropractic and one common statement from them is, "I heard that once you start chiropractic care you can't stop." Thinking about this always gets me a little heated because it depicts how wrong most views of health are. We have been trained to be results driven with an end point in sight.
Health and wellness are not events, they are journeys. Exercise and eating right are not things you do until you lose those extra pounds or lower your cholesterol, they are things you do for life weather or not you have symptoms or complaints. You don't just go to the dentist when your teeth are rotting out of your head, you go for maintenance and cleaning weather or not you have symptoms.
Caring for your spine is much the same way. How often do you need 100% nerve flow to every cell, tissue, and organ? Yes, 100% of the time and this is not possible unless you maintain your spine for life!!!
